Arsenal eye next Gabriel Martinelli
After pulling the rabbit out of the hat by signing starlet Gabriel Martinelli from the fourth tier of Brazilian football last summer, Arsenal are looking to repeat their trick this summer as technical director Edu Gaspar again flexes his knowledge of football in his home country.
According to the father of midfielder Gerson, who is also said to be one of his agents, Arsenal are interested in signing the 22-year-old Flamengo star.
Santos, however, also stated that his son is happy with Flamengo. He won the vaunted Copa Libertadores and the league title last year, his first back in Brazil after a disappointing spell in Italy, and is not eager to leave.
“The idea is to build a history in the club,” he continued. “We were always flamenguistas. Gerson is extremely happy.”
Tierney explains why Gunners move caused “sleepless nightANELEeran Tierney had to leave boyhood club Celtic to join Arsenal in the summer. As club captain and a revered hero, it was a difficult decision to make.
“I had sleepless nights,” Tierney told Sky Sports when recalling the uncertainty in his mind of whether to stay and go. “It was a hard decision. I knew how big Arsenal were. They are a massive club in a massive league.
“It was obviously a great offer, but I still had sleepless nights thinking, ‘What’s the best thing to do here?’. It went on for ages.
“The first bid came in and I then signed on deadline day. At the same time, I was just coming back from my injury.
“I was like, ‘Don’t even focus on what’s going to happen, just work hard and get fit, everything happens for a reason’.
Tierney arrived in a £25 million deal but has struggled for fitness in his first year at the club. Nevertheless, after recovering from a sports hernia operation and then a dislocated shoulder, he is now fit and ready to return upon the resumption of the league season.
Bukayo Saka has enjoyed quite the first senior season at Arsenal. 18 league appearances, more assists than anyone else in the squad, and a string of impressive performances at left-back under Mikel Arteta’s guidance.
The 18-year-old’s superb form is attracting interest, especially as his contract enters its final year and negotiations regarding an extension are still ongoing.
Football Insider reports that Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp have “set their sights” on Saka. The Englishman is young, mobile, has senior experience, and is still developing, all elements that fit into the Liverpool recruitment model.
Arsenal are still keen to tie Saka down to a long-term deal, but with talks on hold during the lockdown, Liverpool smell an opportunity to steal one of the brightest young talents in the Premier League.
Arsenal to seal first summer signing
As reported by football.london, Arsenal are in talks to sign teenager George Lewis.
The winger had a successful two-week trial with the north London club, and is close to sealing a deal to join on a permanent basis.
Lewis, 19, is currently a free agent after several seasons in Norway and had attracted interest from clubs in Portugal and elsewhere in Europe before catching the eye during a fortnight with Arsenal in March.
